What I Do

Combined Methods Capturing Collective Effervescence

01
Methodological Approach

Integrated Quantitative & Qualitative

The best research incorporates both quantitative and qualitative measurement; relying on just one is a fight with one hand tied behind your back. I bring experience in custom & syndicated quantitative data merged with qualitative in-depth interviews, focus groups, and observational ethnography.

02
Theoretical Approach

Thinking in Systems

Most researchers do not bring a theoretical framework based on their convictions; I bring together a dialogue between sociological Social Conflict Theory and Systems Thinking. In Systems Thinking, everything is made up of Stocks (what is being measured — like water in a bathtub), Flows (inputs and outputs, like faucets and drains), and Feedback Loops (reinforcing or collapsing loops, plus balancing loops).

03
Statement on AI

How I Use AI

Simply put: let machines do what machines are good at, and I'll do what humans are good at. Machine-assisted work scales analysis far beyond what was thought possible, and we should use them for that work. But machines can't read a room, can't get a vibe from someone, and can't feel the collective effervescence between people.

Who I Am

From early life in Bermuda emerged a deep curiosity and passion for research, combined with a love for social understanding, and a drive for greater challenges.

Early Years
Matthew as a child in Bermuda

Growing up in Bermuda

I could not have asked for a better place to call home growing up. I sat at the cultural intersection of American, Caribbean, Canadian, United Kingdom, and European culture on pink sandy beaches.

Theological Studies

United Kingdom · Lancaster

I thought I wanted to study theology, but Europe's people and culture had something else planned. The depth of history and diversity of people pointed me in a completely different direction.

2011
Exploring academics in Bermuda

Exploring Academics

Bermuda College

I moved back home to Bermuda and decided to explore a range of academic interests — Art History, Economics, Literature, and Psychology — before finding Sociology.

2012 — 2016
Graduation — Dalhousie University

Integrated Approach to Social Research

Dalhousie University · Halifax · Canada

I settled on Sociology & Social Anthropology with an emphasis on social theory. My interest in social structures, power dynamics, and enforcement led me to my thesis — field work with Campus Security titled "We're More Than Just The Guys With The Keys."

2015 — 2016
National Museum of Bermuda

Museum Curator

National Museum of Bermuda

Finding a role in my field of interest was challenging, but a generous museum leader saw potential and gave me an opportunity as a junior curator in artifact restoration.

2016 — 2019
Presenting Bermuda tourism research

Bermuda Tourism Researcher

Bermuda Tourism Authority

I remember growing up wanting to work in Bermuda's tourism sector; for generations my family were hoteliers on the island. This role combined my love for Bermuda and its tourism while applying and honing my area of expertise. This role — and the people who made it — has had the most lasting impact on my career.

Matthew in Washington, DC

Moving to DC

District of Columbia

"Rally with the best" was influential advice for me: get to a leading urban center, surround yourself with smart, ambitious, highly capable people, and they'll push you to rally with the best.

2019 — 2021
Leading research

Specializing in Qualitative Research

Hanover Research · Washington, DC

I knew I wanted to develop my methodological experience in an applied corporate environment. What I didn't know was how unique and shaping an experience it would be — having in-depth interviews and leading focus groups during some of the most isolating times in modern history.

2021 — 2025
Presenting at a summit

Specializing in Quantitative Research

Research Consulting · Washington, DC

Next, I wanted to develop myself as a quant researcher. Based on my performance I was asked to hold several roles — from custom quantitative researcher, to developing my editorial voice as a research expert in the Travel & Hospitality industry, to finally leading on brand & reputation syndicated quantitative data.

Matthew's wedding

Got Married!

We began as a long-distance relationship between DC and Bermuda, weathered the challenges of the pandemic, and shared countless incredible experiences along the way — so we made it official and got married.

The Coca-Cola Company

Joining One of the World's Most Loved Brands

The Coca-Cola Company · Washington, DC

The path was not as straight as my timeline makes it seem. I am so grateful to be working with one of the world's most recognizable and beloved brands, applying all my research skills to support public affairs, communications, and sustainability efforts both globally and in North America. The best is yet to come.
