As of the 14 May 2026 NOAA/CPC outlook, El Niño is overwhelmingly likely to develop and persist into the 2026–27 winter, and a strong-to-"super" event is currently the single most probable outcome. For a water-focused trip this outranks the calendar: El Niño warms the sea, starves the food web, and is the textbook enemy of exactly the animals you're chasing — marine iguanas, penguins, cormorants, sea lions. It is also genuinely uncertain in strength (a weak event like 2009–10 barely registered), and the forecast updates again on 11 June 2026. Watch that release before locking dates and deposits.
Two currents run the show. The warm/wet season (≈Dec–May) brings warmer water (~24–27°C), calmer seas and clearer visibility — best for comfortable snorkeling, turtles and shallow-bay rays. The cool/dry "garúa" season (≈Jun–Nov) brings cold, plankton-rich upwelling: rougher, murkier, colder, but far more productive — peak penguin and cormorant feeding, whales, big-animal activity. You trade comfort & clarity against marine productivity.
El Niño doesn't flatten the system — it inverts it. The marine food web crashes (algae, fish, and the grazers and predators that depend on them), while heavy rain greens the islands and terrestrial life booms: finches breed, vegetation flushes, tortoises and land iguanas feed well. A strong 2026–27 event is a marine-negative, terrestrial-positive bet. If your heart is in the water, that's the wrong side of the trade.
Your certification quietly sets the menu. The headline pelagic spectacles — schooling hammerheads and whale sharks at Darwin & Wolf, and the hammerhead wall at Gordon Rocks — need Advanced certification, strong-current experience and (for Darwin/Wolf) a liveaboard. They're effectively off the table at OW/snorkel level. The western marvels (underwater-feeding iguanas, flightless cormorants, mola mola) sit on coasts usually reached only by cruise. Access, not the animal, is the binding constraint.
Build the trip on High-odds species and let the rest be gifts. Sea lions, green turtles, basking marine iguanas, whitetip reef sharks, reef fish, tortoises, land iguanas and colony seabirds are near-certain at the right site in any season — anchor on these. Eagle rays, penguins and flamingos are strong bets at specific spots. Mantas, mola, whales and the big shark schools are genuinely unpredictable — never design an itinerary that only "works" if one of them shows.

High needs an authoritative source (Galápagos Conservancy, GCT, CDRS, eBird, peer-reviewed) or ≥2 independent guides. Moderate = a single credible source. Low = occasional or luck. Anything unsourced is left blank — never guessed, never shown as Low.
Open any species and each site carries its source line. Site-level data now covers 23 of 34 species; the other 11 are genuinely pelagic, deep, or Darwin-&-Wolf-only and stay on an honest "overall" estimate rather than a fabricated site grade.
Everything is filtered through Open-Water certification — roughly 18 m depth and no strong-current sites. Darwin & Wolf and Gordon Rocks are out of reach; the western and northern outer islands are cruise-only, marked by coral borders on the map.
The month lens controls presence only — when a species is actually there — and never invents a seasonal odds curve. The El Niño toggle is a separate, explicitly labelled projection (Severe −2 tiers, Negative −1, Benefits +1) of ecological stress, not a forecast of your dates.
Map dots are positioned for orientation, not navigation; genuinely co-located sites (the Puerto Villamil and Floreana clusters) are fanned apart with leader lines back to their true points.
